Joshua M. Paiz in ELT Research Bites discusses ethical treatment of second-language writers by citing Tony Silva‘s 1997 article from TESOL Quarterly. It’s another interesting flip on the “deficit model” of evaluating L2 students, suggesting that these border crossers in our classrooms actually bring “more” rather than “less.” As instructors, our pastoral side again is called upon to go beyond accommodating accents – in this case, “writing accents” – to praising such accenting as a blessing on our communities.
